Dogdyke Steam drainage Station

Mr John Porter MBE

It is with great sadness that we report the sudden death of John Porter on Friday18th November.

visit to the October Open Day

John became involved in the winter of 1969-70 when, together with Guy Burton of Horncastle, he took steps to arrest the serious deterioration of the steam engine building and seal it up to prevent vandalism. He also energetically fought off a proposal by the Ministry of Defence to demolish the site.

The Trust was formed in 1973 with John as Secretary, a role which he undertook with enthusiasm and skill for many years in addition to supporting the restoration work on the steam engine itself. The crowning glory must surely be on Saturday 9th July 1977 when the engine was steamed for the first time since 1940 in front of members and guests.

He maintained his interest in the Pumping Station throughout his very active life and he always attended Open Days when possible. He last visited us on Sunday 2nd October and he planned to attend the AGM although he was taken ill just a few hours beforehand.

He will be missed by all and it is true to say that without his efforts the Pumping Station would not exist today.

Please contact the Secretary for details of the funeral arrangements.
